Sanding Belts

Sanding belts are continuous loops of abrasive-coated backing material used on belt sanders — stationary machines (contact wheels, platten, slack section) or portable belt sanders. They are particularly effective for long linear passes over flat or contoured surfaces, where the continuous contact of a belt provides a more consistent scratch pattern than a disc.

Grain Types for Sanding Belts

AO — Aluminum Oxide (General Purpose)

Aluminum oxide is the standard grain for general-purpose sanding on wood, metal, and composites. AO belts are cost-effective, widely available, and perform well across a broad range of materials and applications. For shops processing standard carbon steel, mild steel, softwoods, hardwoods, and MDF, AO belts are the baseline specification. They are available across the full grit range from 36 to 400 and suit the majority of medium-production applications.

ZA — Zirconia Alumina (Higher Metals Performance)

Zirconia alumina belts deliver significantly higher cut rates and longer life than AO on harder metals. The self-sharpening characteristic of ZA grain maintains an aggressive cutting action throughout the belt's life, reducing frequency of belt changes and lowering cost-per-operation in high-volume metal finishing environments. ZA belts are the preferred choice for stainless steel, structural steel, and harder alloys where AO belts would load or dull prematurely. They are the correct choice for high-throughput production lines where belt life and output rate are the primary metrics. Sanding belts are the superior choice in specific scenarios where discs cannot match their performance:

  • Long linear passes: Belt contact is directional and continuous, making belts ideal for grain-consistent finishing on long flat sections, panels, and bar stock.
  • Heavy stock removal on flat surfaces: The full-face contact of a belt on a platen or contact wheel delivers higher material removal rates than a disc over large flat areas.
  • Consistent scratch pattern: Belt sanding produces a unidirectional scratch pattern that is easier to control for painted and coated finishes requiring a specific surface profile (Ra value).
  • Heat management: On stationary belt sanders with slack-section capability, the non-contact section of the belt cycle allows heat to dissipate, reducing workpiece temperature rise compared to continuous disc contact.

Belt-Specific Tips: Splice, Tension, and Tracking

  • Splice direction: Always run the belt with the splice arrow pointing in the direction of travel. Running a belt against the splice arrow causes the splice joint to lift and fail prematurely. Check every belt before mounting.
  • Tensioning: Correct belt tension is critical. A belt that is too loose will slip, track inconsistently, and wear unevenly. A belt that is too tight will overload the machine bearings and cause premature belt failure. Consult your machine manufacturer's specification for correct tension.
  • Tracking: All belt sanders have a tracking adjustment that controls lateral belt position on the drums. Adjust tracking before starting each belt and recheck after the first few minutes of operation once the belt has seated.

Sanding Discs

Sanding discs are used on angle grinders, random-orbit sanders (ROS), and disc sanders. They offer faster setup and easy interchange between grits compared to belts, and are well-suited to contoured surfaces, localized finishing, and applications where portability is required.

Disc Types and Attachment Methods

Fibre-Backed Resin Discs

Fibre-backed discs are the heavy-duty standard for metal grinding and sanding on angle grinders. The vulcanised fibre backing provides rigidity and heat resistance under aggressive grinding conditions. These discs mount on a backing pad with a central screw attachment and are the correct choice for aggressive stock removal on metal with an angle grinder. PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) Discs

PSA discs have a self-adhesive backing that mounts directly to a foam or rubber pad on a stationary disc sander. They are simple to change and provide reliable adhesion during operation. Hook-and-Loop Discs
