Automotive and body work spans everything from cutting out rusted panels to feather-edging filler and polishing a final finish, and each step needs a very different abrasive. Thin body panels and mixed materials mean controlling heat, avoiding distortion, and protecting the surfaces you are not working on.
Rust and Spot-Weld Removal
- Stripping rust and coatings: Clean-and-strip discs and non-woven strip discs remove rust, paint, and underseal without gouging the panel.
- Spot-weld removal: Drill out or grind spot welds carefully to separate panels without damaging the mating surface.
- Cutting out panels: Thin cut-off wheels make precise cuts on rusted or damaged sections with minimal heat.
Panel Prep and Feather-Edging
Before filler and primer, the edges of a repair need to be feathered so the transitions disappear under paint:
- Use sanding discs in progressive grits to feather paint edges into bare metal.
- Keep heat down on thin panels and let the abrasive cut rather than forcing it.
- Fine-grit flap discs and fibre discs handle weld blending on panel repairs.
Building to a Paint-Ready Finish
- Step through grits methodically, since each grit removes the scratches left by the last.
- Non-woven surface-conditioning discs create a uniform key for primer adhesion.
- For final polishing on trim and stainless, polishing wheels and compounds bring up the shine.
Protecting the Work
Body panels are thin and adjacent surfaces are easily damaged. Use the lightest effective abrasive, control heat to prevent warping, and mask or shield the areas you are not working to avoid collateral scratching.
