Heavy structural work is all about removing a lot of material, fast, on thick plate and beams without burning through wheels or operators. Beam prep, bevelling for full-penetration welds, gouging, and knocking down oversized welds all demand aggressive, high-performance abrasives that hold up under heavy pressure.

Maximizing Stock-Removal Rate

• Depressed-centre grinding wheels (Type 27 and 28): The workhorse for bulk removal on carbon and structural steel. ZA grain, P24 to P36, self-sharpens under heavy pressure.
• Ceramic flap discs: Where you want removal plus a usable finish, ceramic grain cuts faster and lasts longer than aluminum oxide, lowering cost-per-part despite the higher unit price.
• Pressure and angle: Heavy fab rewards firm, consistent pressure at the correct angle, but technique still drives wheel life.

Bevelling and Joint Prep for Code Welds

Full-penetration welds on structural connections require accurate bevels and clean root faces:

• Use cut-off and grinding wheels to establish consistent bevel angles on plate edges.
• Grind back to bright metal to remove mill scale, which causes inclusions and weld defects.
• Consistent joint geometry is what lets a welder lay a sound, code-compliant weld the first time.

Cutting Heavy Section

• Large-diameter cut-off wheels on chop saws and stationary machines part beam, angle, and heavy plate efficiently.
• Match grain to material: ZA for general structural steel, and dedicated products for stainless or hard alloys.

Lowering Cost-Per-Part

On high-consumption structural jobs, the cheapest wheel is rarely the cheapest job. Premium ceramic and zirconia abrasives remove more metal per disc and per minute, cutting both consumable spend and labour hours. Track cost-per-part rather than cost-per-disc to see the real picture.
