Abrasives manufacturing has always been materials-intensive. Finnish manufacturer Mirka has built what it describes as the world's first circular grain manufacturing plant, designed to convert used abrasive waste and industrial by-products back into usable abrasive grains. Brought online in late 2025, the facility is expected to yield its first circular abrasive products to market in 2026 — a genuine turning point for an industry that has changed little in its fundamental raw-material model for decades.
How Circular Grain Manufacturing Works
Mirka's CIGMA (Circular Grain Manufacturing) plant sits on the company's production campus in Jeppo, Finland. The 7,000 m² facility represents a €25 million investment, with €5.89 million co-funded through Business Finland as part of the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility.
The process takes two types of input — production scrap from Mirka's own factories and spent abrasive materials returned by end users — and reprocesses them into new ceramic and abrasive grain that feeds back into standard manufacturing lines. Mirka estimates the plant will reduce its own CO₂ footprint by approximately 5,000 tonnes per year. The company has set a target of 70% circularity across its product portfolio by 2035, with CIGMA as the core infrastructure to get there.
Part of a Bigger Shift
CIGMA is one piece of a broader transformation underway at Mirka. The company has historically been known for coated abrasives — sanding discs, sheets, and belts — but has spent recent years assembling a full-spectrum grinding portfolio. In September 2025, Mirka acquired the conventional bonded abrasives division of Hermes Schleifmittel GmbH, including a manufacturing facility in Uetersen, Germany. Combined with earlier acquisitions of superabrasive specialist Cafro (2017) and dressing roll maker URMA Rolls (2021), Mirka now manufactures across the complete range of precision grinding products.
The company showcased this full lineup at GrindingHub 2026 in Stuttgart (May 5–8), with an emphasis on process control, surface consistency, and performance in demanding production grinding environments.
A Signal for the Wider Market
Mirka is not alone in pushing sustainability in abrasives. - Performance is not the tradeoff. Mirka is developing circular grain to meet the same cut-rate and finish standards as conventional ceramics. Buyers should not have to choose between sustainable and effective.
